A new month, a new theme... July's theme is "Island Life" and will feature everyday scenes of life in paradise! This week's piece, "Ulu Maiden" depicts a young woman picking ulu, or breadfruit. Those of you familiar with my early work will recognize traces of my 2004 piece, "Ulu Wahine", which is a part of the Hotel Hana Maui Collection.
"Ulu Maiden" is essentially part two, similar in theme and layout, but completely different in the creative process. "Ulu Wahine" was composed on a large sheet of watercolor paper using gouache and oil pastels. "Ulu Maiden" was created with oils and a detail brush on a small 6" x 6" canvas. I enjoyed visiting an old piece to get inspiration for a new one... part two feels like her little sister!
