As a child raised in upcountry Maui, the protea flower holds a special place in my heart. I have memories of running around the protea farm where we lived, feeling the flowers' feathery petals and picking bouquets on Mother's Day morning. The exotic protea flower comes in many varieties (pink minks and pincushions are depicted in this week's piece), and last for years when dried.
I enjoyed creating this collage piece, and used real velvet to simulate the soft fringe on the mink beauty. For those of you not familiar with the unusual protea flower, I've included a photo above. My interpretation using collage technique is below.
